5 Reasons to Invest in an Intruder Alarm for Your Home

Would you like to feel more safe and secure in your home?

They say an English man’s home is his castle. What’s more, it’s human nature to do what we can to protect those we love and the things that are precious to us.

Unfortunately, burglary is one such event of which we need to be wary.

Burglary is largely an opportunistic crime, but it can have a devastating effect if it happens to you. Anger, fear, distress – knowing your home has been invaded by a stranger who has taken YOUR personal belongings with no regard to your feelings can have a long-lasting impact.

But the good news is that an intruder alarm CAN minimise the risk of this awful occurrence happening to you. In fact, according to the Metropolitan Police, “Studies reveal that it is far less likely that you will become the victim of a burglary at home if you have a correctly fitted and well maintained burglar alarm.”

The reason is simple.

Burglars tend to be opportunistic. And given the choice between two properties, a thief is more likely to choose the home where he believes he’s least likely to be disturbed. Clearly, the risk of an alarm bell attracting attention (or even notifying the police) at a home with a burglar alarm is an effective deterrent.

But deterring thieves isn’t the only reason to invest in an intruder alarm.

Here are some other reasons to consider…

Peace of mind

Intruder alarms help families sleep easier.

For example, most modern alarm systems enable you to disable and activate different zones simultaneously. What this means in practice is at night-time you can activate all the sensors downstairs, but switch off the upstairs sensors. In turn, you can move freely around the sleeping area of your house whilst relaxing with the peace of mind that the sensors downstairs will alert you should the doors or windows be violated.

But that’s not all…

If you have small children at home you can also put sensors on the doors. These sensors will let you know if the door is opened. In turn, you’ll be immediately alerted if your child tries to “escape”!

Reduce the cost of your home insurance

You may find that it’s possible to reduce the cost of your home insurance if you fit an intruder alarm in your home. In fact, according to The Guardian, Which! Magazine (August 2008) found that most insurance companies would discount home contents insurance by 2% - 15% if an intruder alarm was fitted. Whilst this is a small cost saving, it’s good to know that insurers do reward conscientious homeowners for being security aware.

A call for help

A sounding alarm is very noisy – both inside and outside the property. As a result, neighbours are alerted and may investigate or call for help – especially if they know your usual pattern for being in and around your home.

It’s true that people are a little more relaxed now when an intruder alarm is sounded – largely because of the number of false alarms that do happen. The good news is over the years alarm systems have become a lot more sophisticated. For example, a speech dialler will automatically call the pre-recorded numbers should your alarm be sounded. This can work well if you’re on holiday or away from home as you can be alerted to check your property. What’s more, it’s even possible to have your alarm monitored by the police.

In short, depending on your individual requirements and the risks for your particular home, you can find a security system that works for you.

Eyes open – 24/7

Today, there is even more sophistication available for protecting your home against crimes such as vandalism as well as burglary.

For example, did you know that you can install a domestic CCTV system into your property? As a result, you can see what’s happening inside and outside your home – even if you’re not physically there. This additional level of security has other benefits. For example, if you are responsible for elderly parents you can check in on them – the same goes for small children.

Obviously, this additional precaution isn’t right for every home – but then security is a very personal thing.
